Indian States with Highest 
Solar Generation

FACTS

About 5,000 trillion kWh  per ye ar energy is incident over India's land terrain with most parts receiving 4-7 kWh per sq. meter per day.

India reached a milestone of 100 GW of renewabl e energy production, 40% from solar. India is end owed with expansive topography, from high mountai n s to desert vastlands, making the country a potential hotbead for solar power genertation.  

Here are the states with highest solar production at present:

1. Karnataka

Karnataka is at the top of the list with the largest solar energy generation capacity in the country and is located in Pavagadu Solar park in the Tumkur district. It was commissioned in January 2018. The solar capacity by 2021 stood at 7,346 MW, with the solar sector’s share at 19.58 per cent.

2. Telangana

It has the second-highest installed solar power generation capacity in the country located in the Palwai village. This plant was commissioned in June 2016.The solar capacity in 2021 stood at 3,900 MW, with solar sector’s share at 22 per cent. ReNew Power announced the commissioning of the biggest solar plant in Telangana in Dharmaraopet village 

3. Rajasthan

Rajasthan is known as the most solar developed state of India Badhla Solar park  in Jodhpur district, commissioned in March, 2020 is the largest solar park in the world as of 2020. The Solar park has a total capacity of 2,245 MW. When its full capacity is operational, the park will become the world’s largest fully commissioned PV project. The state is on track to have a solar capacity of 30,000 MW  by 2024-25 .

4. Andhra Pradesh

The first phase of the park was commissioned in 2016 with a capacity of 250 MW. A further 750 MW was planned to have been commissioned by March 2018. Andhra Pradesh's solar capacity at the end of June, 2021 stood at 4,116 MW, with solar sector’s share at 12 per cent.

5. Tamil Nadu

Kamuthi So;ar Power Project is a photovoltaic power station spread over an area of 2,500 acres in Kamuthi, Ramanathapuram district.Tamil Nadus’ solar capacity at the end of May, 2021 stood at 3,974 MW, with solar sector’s share at 6.74 per cent.

6. Gujarat

Gujarat is India’s most solar developed state and a leader in solar power generation in India. The solar capacity as of December, 2020 stood at 3,640 MW, with the solar sector’s share at 5.12 per cent. , Gujarat solar park 1 also called Charanka Solar Park, is being built on a 2,000-hectare (4,900-acre) plot of land near Charanka village in Patan district.

7. Madhya Pradesh

Rewa Ultra Mega Solar, in the Gurh tehsil of Rehwa District, is the first solar project in the country to break the grid parity barrier. It is one of the largest solar power plants in India and one of Asia's largest single site solar plants.The state's solar capacity at the end of March, 2021 stood at 2,463.22 MW. Madhya Pradesh’s total solar power generation capacity stood at 5,000 MW at the end of November, 2020, with the solar sector’s share at 7 per cent.

8. Maharashtra

Maharashtra has some of the best regions in India to install solar power plants, Sakri solar plant in Dhule district is the largest solar power plant in Maharashtra and Saibaba Trust has the largest solar steam system in the world.The state’s solar capacity at theSeptember, 2021 stood at 2030 MW. It’s solar capacity at the end of March, 2021 stood at 2,289.97 MW, with the solar sector’s share at 3 percent.

9. Uttar Pradesh

Jalaun Solar Power Project is a solar photo-voltaic power generating station spanning two villages of Kuhana and Shahjahanpur in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh. The state’s solar capacity at the end of March, 2021 stood at 1,712.50 MW  with the solar sector’s share at 3.49 per cent.

10. Punjab

T he World’s largest single rooftop solar power plant of 11.5 Mw capacity, an area of 42 acres, was installed in 2016 in Beas, Punjab. Combining this rooftop power plant, the solar power plant in Punjab, spreading over 82 acres on eight rooftops of sheds, has the capacity to generate 19.5 MW. Punjabs’ solar capacity is on track to reach 5,000 MW  by 2024.
